On a bat, the blade gives the character, but it’s the rubber that touches the ball. Change the rubber on the same blade and you change the bat. To make sense of spec sheets, three parameters do most of the work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Between the rubber sheet and the blade sits a sponge, whose thickness ranges from about 1.5 mm to just over 2 mm. A thick sponge lets the ball sink in further: it comes off faster and with more spin. The flip side is a more demanding bat that amplifies the slightest angle error.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Sponge hardness, measured in degrees, matters as much as its thickness. A soft sponge absorbs the ball, forgives imprecise strokes and generates spin without much arm speed. A hard sponge demands a full, fast stroke, but it returns a flatter, heavier ball for those who know how to work it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Be wary of comparisons between brands: each manufacturer uses its own scale. A hardness figure can only be compared with other models from the same brand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The more the rubber surface \u201cgrips\u201d, the easier it is to brush the ball, whether serving or returning short. Very tacky rubbers focus on rotation; more elastic rubbers focus on the catapult effect and speed. It’s also the first quality to wear out: hence the importance of care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Speed, spin and control ratings are there to position a model within a brand’s catalogue, not to compare two brands. Rely instead on thickness, hardness and the intended playing style, and choose for your level today, not the one you hope to reach in two seasons’ time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
On the rules: in official competition, only rubbers on the list of models authorised by the international federation are allowed, with one black side and one bright-coloured side (red, or another authorised colour). For training and recreational play, the choice is yours.<\/p>\n\n\n
