The ball dips onto the table, then speeds up after the bounce. Mastered, it’s a stroke that is both safe and dangerous; executed badly, it’s an outright error. Here are the three decisive points, described for a right-hander playing forehand (swap sides if you’re left-handed).

1. Legs first

Place your feet slightly wider than shoulder width, bend your knees and set your right foot slightly behind your left. During the backswing, load your weight onto your right leg; as you strike, shift it onto your left leg. This transfer provides the power, without your arm needing to tense up.

2. Rotate your upper body

During the backswing, hips and shoulders turn together to the right, then come back forwards as you strike. The arm follows the rotation of the torso rather than working on its own. The most common mistake is hitting with the forearm alone, legs straight and upper body frozen: the stroke then loses both power and consistency.

3. Contact point and brushing

Take the ball in front of you, on your right side, at the top of the bounce or just after. Against a backspin ball, open the bat more and direct your stroke upwards; against a ball already carrying topspin, close it and drive the stroke forwards. Look for a fine, accelerating contact that brushes the ball, rather than a flat hit. The acceleration happens at the moment of contact, not before.

After impact, your arm finishes naturally in front of your face, bat pointing up, then you return immediately to the ready position.

The most costly mistakes

Stiff legs : no knee bend means no weight transfer, and the topspin becomes a mere arm movement.

Late contact : the ball is taken beside or behind the body, making it impossible to brush it forwards.

Broken wrist : keep it in line with your forearm.

No recovery : a good topspin followed by a frozen stance, and the next ball is lost.

<use href="#i-lock"/>

The following section is reserved for club members.

Free registration in 20 seconds: complete exercises, challenge of the month, previews and -5 % on your first order.

Join the clubAlready a member?
